35 Best Online Master’s In Social Work for 2020

The first woman to receive a Nobel Peace Prize was a social worker, Jane Addams, known for establishing Chicago settlement houses in the early 1900s. Her example of community organization gave recognition to the burgeoning field of Social Work.

What Is a Master of Social Work Degree?

Social workers can have a significant impact – they counsel and advise individuals, families, communities, groups, and organizations. Just as there are different areas of need, there are different layers of Social Work. While you can work in the field with a bachelor’s degree, the Master’s of Social Work (MSW) is required for licensure to work in social service agencies and clinical areas.

Social Workers can work in clinical or non-clinical settings. Non-clinical Social Workers work in communities or with social service agencies developing policies and community programs. Clinical MSWs work directly with individuals or families to assess needs and coordinate levels of care with the appropriate agencies.

How Much Can You Earn with a Master of Social Work Degree?

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, Social Workers can expect to see an 11% increase in job availability between 2016-2026, which is much faster than other professions. The BLS estimates salary ranges between $44,840-$63,1400, depending on where you live and work.

What Is Required for a Master of Social Work Degree?

You don’t have to have a Bachelor’s degree in Social Work to pursue an MSW; but, undergraduate coursework in psychology, sociology, political science, and economics will give you a leg up. You’ll study topics such as social work ethics, behavioral science, group dynamics, organizational behavior, counseling techniques, etc. Both clinical and non-clinical MSWs will require fieldwork experiences or internships. To become a clinical Social Worker, you’ll need to work in a clinical setting with a supervisor and qualify for licensure. Online MSW programs are available as Advanced Standing (BSW prepared) and Traditional (B.S. in a field other than Social Work.) Typically, 60 credit hours are required for a Traditional program and 30+ hours for Advanced Standing.

What Are the Best Master of Social Work Degrees?

OSR uses six data points: three school-wide and three program specific. For school-wide, OSR uses Student Satisfaction, Admission Rates, and the number of programs the school offers online. For program-specific, OSR checks the Median Debt of graduates from that program, how many degrees are offered within that program’s umbrella department, and what percentage of students at that school graduated from that department.

The six statistics are displayed by each school. The sliding bar under each statistic represents how that school compares to other US institutions. “Not reported” means a school did not release that information to the US Department of Education. A more detailed description of the OSR process can be found on the methodology page.
